The Dragon Prince was was the last production I worked on at Bardel Entertainment before moving over to Mainframe Studios.
And perhaps it was my favourite. Usually the 3D animated format finds itself leaning towards pre-school and pre-adolescents, which a bulk of my experience had been till this show came along. It was really great to work on a show that had some dark undertones, a more serious and mature tone and to deal with some content that we don't get to explore in our careers sometimes.
My role as Modeling Supervisor saw me overseeing the builds of Characters, Sets and Props, and to help find ways to create a rich and artist feeling world (aspiring for more of a traditional 2D feel) with the benefits of some flexibility from our worlds and assets that can be achieved in 3D.
Because of that, the workflow on Dragon Prince became a very intermeshed process between Design, Modeling, Surfacing, and Lighting/Render to achieve the look in the assets that were desired. Even right down to the animation and FX style, which had to be thoughtfully animated to avoid overdoing the feeling of 3D.
Looking forward to seeing season 4 when it comes out, as it will be new territory for me that I haven't seen developed.

This is a "making of" video that was made by our CG Supervisor, Chris Browne, showing a small breakdown of how we used cards and projections supplied by the design department to help sell some of the 2D feeling of the world.
